Pot Noodle / King Pot Sticky Rib (Mr Chu's Golden Noodle No.7)

Called: Pot Noodle Mr Chu's Golden Noodle No.7 Sticky Rib

I like this. This is my Top Pot Noodle. Sweet and sticky with a nice beefy flavour. There's lots of flavour, and it's all goodness. The noodles are a little more Asian than one has come to expect from UK noods - firmer than usual, and with a suggestion of wheaty flavour. At £1 a 90g pot, these are not cheap, but they are finger licking tasty.

The marketing on the pot is in the same tones as Kabuto Noodles, so is cute and fun, and indicates that Unilver know where their biggest threat is coming from, and what the consumers are now going for: Asian style noodles.

Yummy.

And this is what it tastes like:  Sticky Rib advert

Madness. Anyway, this has a fair amount of soy sauce and a bit of tomato sauce. A little bit sweet, and a little bit savoury tangy. The noodles are a bit like eating flour and water, and the whole thing could do with a bit of salt -and once you do salt it, it does taste banging all right. Neck it!

Crap.

Tried again. Still crap. Made in the UK with a floury, bland sauce. Veggie. The noodles are air dried and tasteless. They're either too hard or too mushy - there seems to be no point in between. Probably the worse noodles in the world.

ASDA Chosen By You Chicken Flavour Noodles

It doesn't say where these noods are made, but as they are deep fried noodles and fairly tasty and greasy, they'll be made somewhere in Asia. The powder contains chicken, but you couldn't tell. This is very bland. MSG tastes more of chicken than this.  It's a poor do, really. Nice noodles, inept flavouring. That they kill chickens in order to make this crap is a crime.

Score: 3    Date: Feb 2014

In ASDA the other day, the first time in ages, and I grabbed some of their own brand noodles to check up on them, forgetting just how bad they are. Greasy and foul. And contains ground up dead chicken. Never again. Bad. Bad. Bad. Made in China.

Pot Noodle Chicken & Mushroom

It needs flavour. It's soft and easy eating, but so boring you'll fall asleep. This is not a slag, it's a tampon.

I like Pot Noodles. I think they're pricy, but very yummy. This was reduced to 50p in my local Co-op so I got it. But it's not that yummy. The noodles take a while to cook, and when they are eventually soft enough to eat, they are tasteless. The sauce is the usual floury British cup noodle sauce: it's floury and fairly bland. But not completely bland there is a mild mushroom and savoury flavour. There's also some tasteless sweetcorn. It's a veggie product made in the UK. It's not a good nood, it's not even a good Pot Noodle.

Top Pot Noodle (the best of the slags)

Pot Noodle was launched in the United Kingdom in 1977 by Golden Wonder. The brand is currently owned by Unilever. The Pot Noodle website directs people to a Pot Noodle Facebook page.

Pot Noodles contain 90g per pot. Smaller than Super Noodles, but slightly lager than the average packet nood. The noodles are made in the UK, in the Pot Noodle Mines in Wales. Pot Noodles are the most popular noods in the UK, with over a third of all sales. The market is deemed to be mainly male students, and the marketing is witty, edgy and self-depreciating, with a focus on the product being slightly dirty, with an adolescent male sexual humour. While Pot Noodles are the most expensive of the regular noods (usually around £1 per 90g pot), the convenience of the plastic cup, the market penetration (every corner shop and supermarket stocks Pot Noodle), and the highly successful marketing campaigns, means they continue to sell well against the competition. However, while the market for noods is expected to grow, Pot Noodle's share  is being challenged by the cheap availability of Asian packet noods, and a shift in the consumer toward wanting better quality products and/or more mature marketing, as evidenced by the growth in posh noods, such as Kabuto Noodles.

Vifon Kurczak Chinski (Chinese Chicken)

Tasty noods. Small, firm and wholesome noods. Decent savoury flavour - warm and comforting. Not greasy, not too assertive, not too weak - just right really. The result is a tasty little snack. Nothing here that will make you exclaim with delight, but for a cheap nood, this is damn good. Made in Vietnam from MSG and crushed chicken.

Ingredients:
noodles (92.8%) of wheat flour, vegetable fat, tapioca, salt, modified starch, sugar, stabilizers: pentasodium triphosphate, guar gum, raising agents: potassium carbonate, sodium carbonate, turmeric, flavoring agents (7.2%) : refined palm oil, salt, sugar, flavor enhancers: monosodium glutamate, disodium guanylate, disodium inosinate, maltodextrin, pepper flavor, garlic (1.0%), dried leek (1.0%), red shallot (0.5 %), chicken extract (0.36%), soy protein hydrolyzate, coloring: caramel, anti-caking agent: E 551, an antioxidant: E 306

I've been saying for years that Super Noodles are crap, but they are not really. They are quite edible. A bit stodgy, yes; a bit flavourless and characterless at times, yes, but they are not crap.  There are better, but there are also much worse. This has no chicken flavour (but also no dead chicken bits), instead it has some tomato paste and herbs. OK, not the best noods in the world, but they can be eaten.

Kabuto Noodles Prawn Tom Yum

If you want posh noods this is the way to go. It's interesting, tasty, and decent enough quality for a powdered product. Of course it's not top quality - it does taste powdery despite constant stirring, and the veg bits do taste rehydrated, but for a dried rather than fresh product it's quite acceptable, and it makes a pleasant change from the regular cheap noods. I wouldn't make it part of my regular mid day snack routine though as I'm really quite comfortable with a 20p deep fried nood from China with lots of MSG, so there's little point in paying extra. I did like these though, so will be looking to try out the rest of the range.

The noodles look different, they are thin, and in swirls, and they have an attractive yellow/brown appearance. They look appetising and special. The flavour is delicate, varied, different, and tasty. There's a distinct warmth, and pleasant citric notes. The rehydrated veg pieces are pleasant, if a little chewy. The whole eating experience is very good - not what you'd expect from the normal dirty slag experience of a Pot Noodle. And streets ahead of other attempts at posh noodles, like Itsu or Naked Noodle - both epic fails.

I enjoy the marketing approach of the Samurai warrior - it's cute, it's fun, and it has the right image for the product. The wording follows the marketing image quite neatly: "Remember to stir well Samurai, for true goodness lies beneath." And the marketing slogan is quite brilliant: "If Man Has No Noodles In Him, He Is Incapable Of Understanding Truth And Beauty". Wow!

The company  was founded in 2011, and the pots are available from Sainsbury's at around £1.99 a pot. Yes, pricey, but worth it for a treat now and again. I'll give these the noodfan thumbs up!
